Find duplicate photos with Phomanto (free alpha version)
You probably know this problem: You want to import photos from your camera, but you don't know which of them you already copied and which are truely new. Because you cannot decide it at that moment, you just copy all of them. This way you create quite a few duplicates on your hard disc wasting space and confusing you sometimes, because you don't know which is the one you should optimize.
I developed a small tool that finds and removes such photo duplicates. Perhaps you want to try it. Feedback is always welcome, so please don't hesitate to mail me. Perhaps I will extend it to a full photo management software if I find the time and some people appreciate it.
Usage is quite intuitive, but let me write a (very) short manual here:
After starting the program for the first time you should click "Scan for Files" and choose a folder that you want to be scanned for duplicates (also subfolders will be scanned). Note that you can do this repeatedly to add multiple folders to the database. In the list on the left side you can see all folders scanned so far. In the context menu (bring it up by clicking with the right mouse button) you can rescan a specific or all folders.
Find Duplicates" searches the database for duplicate files and lists them. You can choose which files to keep by checking "keep". All the other files (the ones that are not checked) will be removed in the next step.
Click on "Remove Duplicates" and you can choose how the duplicates will be removed. You can delete them, move them to a different folder or move them to the Recycle Bin.
Phomanto
To install the program:
- Download the zip file from below
- Open the zip file and start setup.exe
- After installation is finished, the program will start automatically. For starting the program again later, check the start menu for Phomanto.
Please note that this an alpha version of the software. The software can contain bugs, might crash or cause data loss, so you accept to use it at your own risk. It is not recommended to use this software in a productive environment.
The setup program will probably install all necessary packages (like .Net Framework or SQL Server Express Runtime) automatically. Note that this might take a bit of time (depending on the speed of your internet connection) since the packages need to be downloaded by the installer.
New features in version 0.1.1:
- The image's path is now display in a read only text box above the thumbnail. You can copy the path from there to use it for example in the windows explorer.
- A tool tip also displays the complete path (just hover over the text box)
Please deinstall any previous version of the program before installing the new version (Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and features -> Phomanto). At the moment it is
not possible to update an installed version, because I use the very limited basic installer that comes with Visual Studio C# Epress. For the same reason it is not possible to install it in a
custom place on your hard disc.
